Joe Austin – director

Joe is a director working in both theatre and opera disciplines. He studied a joint honours music and drama degree at Hull University.
Previous opera productions include Wagner’s Siegfried (Opera North); Stephen McNeff’s Vivienne (Tête à Tête); Britten’s Albert Herring (Surrey Opera); Stephen McNeff’s A Voice of One Delight (Tête à Tête); Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen, Kodály’s Háry János, Handel’s Orlando, Gluck’s Orpheus and Eurydice (Ryedale Festival); Mendelssohn’s The Homecoming, Britten’s The Prodigal Son (Grimeborn Festival and Ryedale Festival); Tosca (InterOpera Regional Tour).

Joe’s previous direction in theatre includes Restoration, Storm, Pork, Never Tell Them (Oxford Playhouse); Unfinished, Death of the Small Independent Retailer (Liverpool Everyman); Welcome Home (Landor Theatre); Gale-force Clothes Pegs (Southwark Theatre); Sightseeing (5065 for Soho Theatre); and Single Fare to Zurich (Hen and Chickens Theatre).

As assistant director Joe has worked with, among others, Tim Albery on Verdi’s Macbeth, Olivia Fuchs on Don Giovanni, Aletta Collins on Les Noces/Dido and Aeneas (Opera North); Ian Rutherford on The Magic Flute (ENO); Tom Cairns on All About My Mother (Old Vic); Fiona Laird on Longitude (Greenwich Theatre); and Erica Whyman on Marieluise (Gate Theatre).

Joe has taught at Morley Opera School, and at the Italian Opera Summer School.
